Lungy was founded by a doctor during the Covid pandemic, after the realisation that many patients with lung problems would procrastinate on their phones instead of practising their prescribed daily breathing exercises.
Lungy guides people through interactive breathing exercises, and uses your phone's microphone to detect your breathing. As you breathe, the visuals and sounds respond to each breath.
The app in its original form consisted of an initial batch of immersive exercises grouped into 4 different themes. It offered a range of breathing techniques and a general progress report on your breathing capacity.
The doctor had gathered feedback from Lungy's first users and run a focus group on how it could be improved for those with diagnosed lung problems.
I was contracted to level up the app to a 2.0, with new features and a refreshed look. I also reinterpreted Lungy's core navigation for virtual environments, and Lungy: Spaces was part of the first cohort of apps to launch with the new Apple Vision Pro.
The main aim was to get people excited about using Lungy every day. As the library was going to be expanded with new visuals and sounds, we discussed different ways we could create more engaging ways to discover new content, and nurture the motivation to keep practising.
As I designed Lungy's new features, I also worked to refine and elevate the visual design in a way that preserved Lungy's friendly feel. I brought order and consistency to the visual patterns with an audited typographic system, colour library and component set.
Lungy's personality had been designed as an alternative to the dry and clinical devices so often seen in health tech. It was important for Lungy to feel like a nice place to be, rather than a chore.
Lungy 2.0 has launched with a new dashboard that changes throughout the course of the day. The interface changes over the course of the day and suggests an exercise that feels appropriate for the moment.
Each exercise is fitted with a new Configuration screen, outlining the format, techniques and potential benefits, with the option to make custom changes.
The new Explore tab lets you to browse the library based on themes, techniques, or a curated set of featured exercises. It also includes a new Premium feature that lets you build your own breathing exercises from scratch by mix-and-matching your favourite visuals, sounds, touch interactions and breathing style.
The practical exercises are now supported with brand new learning content which includes educational videos and articles giving information and self care tips related to stress, anxiety and sleep.
And you can now understand more about your progress with cumulative statistics, a more detailed progress report, and a streak count to encourage you to keep making the most out of Lungy.
Lungy's new tokenised design system meant we could move more quickly with prototyping and launching each new feature. It also allowed us to easily translate the fresh design to dark mode, and eventually Apple Vision Pro.
After launching in November 2023, Lungy was included in the Featured list on the Apple App Store.
During my final weeks on the project, I began to repurpose Lungy's core navigation for the forthcoming Apple Vision Pro. In my first challenge in designing for spatial interactions, I looked to marry Lungy's screen-based interactions and unique look and feel with the standards set out by Apple.
Lungy: Spaces was part of the first cohort of apps to launch with the Vision Pro, and was subsequently featured in the Vision Pro App Store.
